Practical steps to prepare for Jam

  1. Understand that UME is not a ‘do or die’ affair. By this I don’t mean you should not expect success. I mean you should not plan to commit mal-practices during the exams. Such acts are punishable by law.  Hard work account for much, in Jamb.

2. Make a Time-Table for yourself

3. Aim at scoring 100% and winning Jamb’s best result,

4. PRAY! While preparing and after exam. Claim God’s promises of your success.

5. Make sure you get a syllabus to know what you are required to know in each subject. Jamb brochure comes with details of what u need to study or know.

6. Study smartly using the past questions with the textbook and syllabus. . Get as many past questions as possible (especially the most recent). When you practice make sure you confirm your answers from reputable textbooks.

7. Work on your speed and accuracy because it’s a test of both. Time yourself with old past question. There’s no point knowing all the answers but not being able to finish.

8. With your familiarity with past questions, you will discover the areas where questions usually come from & you can quickly pick on your areas of strength first.

9. Join tutorial groups or friends that are taking same subjects with you.

10. If you can afford it, join a reputable JAMB coaching class.

11. Even if you are not able to cover syllabus, don't panic.

On the Day of the Exam
Arrive at the exam venue 15 – 30 minutes before the schedule time. Do not bring calculator or any other electronic device like cell phone. Do not bring anything that makes noise. Sit down and take some deep breaths to relax before the test begins.

Learn the Rules and Instruction of the Examination
1. The candidates should come along to the examination center with the following items:
  • Original and photocopy of the scratch card
  • Acknowledgement paper and blank teller for identification
  • Four figure table where applicable
  • HB pencil and eraser
  • Razor Blade to sharpen your pencil
  1. You can start from any section of the question whether from English or general paper
  2. Use HB pencil to shade your answers. Ensure that any shading in error is thoroughly erased.
  3. Candidates should write their Names, Jamb Registration numbers and the Question Paper option given to them in the appropriate spaces in the Answer Sheet.
  4. Write your Jamb Registration numbers on the Question Paper in the space provided on the top of page 1.
  5. Attempt all questions.
  6. The use of calculators and/or similar electronic devices is NOT allowed.
  7. No penalty is given for choosing the wrong answer. You should take advantage of this by attempting all questions, even if you have to guess.
10.  Only one answer is allowed for each question. If you mark two answers for one question, you get no mark for that question.
11.  There is no break during the exam. If you have to leave to use the restroom or for any other reason, you may do so, but you loose valuable exam time.
12.  When the stop time is called, you must stop writing immediately and close your test booklet. If you do not stop writing, you risk getting disqualified for the entire exam.
13.  Mark Your Answer Sheet in the Correct Way.
14. Don’t waste time on any question you do not know. Move on quickly to the one you know, any question that becomes difficult leave it and go to the next one.  If you have time, come back to it. If you are best in math, and physics try to get 90% in both.

15. Make sure you understand the difference between similar things e.g. Cartilages and muscles because they don’t just test whether you have an idea but if you know the difference between pretty similar things.

16. For calculation based subjects, JAMB options are actually based on misconceptions i.e. if you don’t understand well, your wrong answer may also be included in the options.

17. Try to sleep early the day before the exam so that you can wake up fresh. I discussed that before.

18. Eat very well everyday but don’t over feed.

19. Approach the exam centre with confidence. This is discussed in the next Chapter.

The Computer based test is an online examination where students are given a set of questions say 20 questions per subject. Each question contains four options- A, B, C, D and candidates click on the right answer. The four subjects you take in the Computer based test are the same subject combination you took in your JAMB.  After answering all questions correctly, you will then click on the “submit” button and your answers will be submitted. The Computer based test is being used by some schools for PUME. It is an objective based test.
